The recent case of the RM1,000 siakap which was served at a floating restaurant in Langkawi has led to consumers exposing many other cases of expensive food items being served at restaurants all over the country.

The list of unreasonably priced food items included: squids and crab biryani to even salted fish kailan!

It was recently reported that tourists at the duty-free island of Langkawi were recently shocked when they had to pay RM4 for a piece of regular roti canai!

This was recently reported by Utusan, where Kedah Consumers Association secretary Mohamad Yusrizal Yusoff explained that the complaint was made against a roadside stall.

“Although we are aware that the price of goods and raw materials is expensive now, the price charged by the stall owners does not make sense.”

There has been a slew of cases of store owners charging exorbitant rates on tourists ever since the reopening of the island following the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Therefore, we ask the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) to always make inspections at premises and food stalls that take the opportunity to raise food prices too high,” he added.

Furthermore, Mohamad Yusrizal mentioned that over the past two weeks, more than 100 consumer complaints have been received regarding the increase in food and raw material prices in the state.

He advised food traders not to impose prices that burden consumers and also recommended that they display price tags clearly so that consumers can make a choice before ordering food.

Perhaps it’s best to check the prices of foods at restaurants or eating outlets before you dig in from now on… regardless of how hangry you are!
