With the floods in Kelantan and Terengganu being at such a severe level, help is required and expected from elected representatives as well as volunteers nationwide.

In a post yesterday morning (December 24), deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi slammed leaders who go overseas on holidays during the monsoon season and said that they must be prepared to be around during critical times.

“Floods can be expected especially in the monsoon season on the east coast due to monsoon changes involving natural and geographical factors,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

He went on to remind such leaders that the people who had elected them to public office were suffering.

“This is where the people will judge their (leaders) sincerity.”

“Flood victims lose their sense of happiness, experience trauma, vehicles are damaged and need to be repaired and income is affected or even lost,” he explained.

Meanwhile, he also called on state governments to better prepare for major floods and implement preventative measures to ensure that environmental damage does not worsen the existing situation.

“This kind of organisational culture should be a daily work culture practice and not when there is a flood then only is attention given!”

Recently, it was reported that Terengganu MB Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar was on holiday with his family in Auckland, New Zealand as Terengganu faced massive flooding.

He has since apologised for his absence and assured the people that he has never abandoned his duty as the MB of Terengganu as he has always observed the flood condition in the state from time to time.
