The previous week of Parliament reconvening has been nothing short of a spectacle. With raised voices and small charts, the penultimate moment was the postponing of the Parliament sessions following the discovery of Covid-19 cases amongst the MPs and the YDPA’s statement. While supposedly set to reconvene on 2 August, Health DG, Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, announced that the Parliament will be temporarily adjourned for a two-week period.
Following this announcement, Opposition MPs including former Youth and Sports Minister, Syed Saddiq, insisted that he will be going to the Parliament on Monday (2 August).
“If you want to stop me, go ahead, I’m not afraid,” he said.
True to their words, several Opposition MPs went to the Parliament in the morning but found the roads leading to the Parliament closed with police blockades to their shock and dismay. Lembah Pantai MP, Fahmi Fadzil, said on his Twitter that when the youths protested on Saturday against the government, all roads leading to Dataran Merdeka were open but the Dataran itself was closed. But when the MPs are going to Parliament, it’s not just the Parliament building that’s closed, all roads leading to the Parliament were closed as well!
What are you afraid of?
Kampar MP, Thomas Su, asked Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, what he’s afraid of while reminding him that the whole world is watching.
MP for Subang, Wong Chen, said that he had even tried to access the back roads leading to the Parliament but found them closed as well.
“Looks like this pintu belakang government has even locked the pintu belakang Parliament.”
Kelvin Yii, MP for Kuching, updated that the PDRM had arrived at the location and told them to disperse. The MPs have decided to gather at Dataran Merdeka to voice out their concerns despite the Parliament being closed.
#Lawan still trends on social media with a newly added hashtag of #OccupyParliament being used to call out the Perikatan Nasional government. Let us know what you think of this.
