Following the first parliament sitting of 2021 on Monday (26 July), just four days in and the sessions are once again in chaos as ministers have been testing positive for Covid-19.

In a statement by the Director-General of Health Malaysia, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, he shared that 2,093 members and staff of parliament were given swab tests from 21 July to 25 July.

“As of 28 July 2021, a total of 56 positive Covid-19 cases have been detected involving two Members of Parliament, six escort officers and 48 officers from various government agencies,” he shared in the statement.

Based on a report by Sinar Harian, parliamentary sessions have since been postponed to next week, 2 August.

The Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon announced the postponement and its cause at the Special Meeting of the Third Term of the 14th Parliament today (29 July).

“Those who have been present since last Monday, but are not there today, will need to undergo testing at a nearby clinic. In this regard, I will postpone the Special Meeting to next Monday (2 August),” he said.

The Dewan Rakyat had earlier adjourned at the end of the morning session, initially for discussions on the insistence on debating the issue of terminating the Emergency Ordinance following the revelation by Istana Negara that the government’s actions confused and misled the Dewan Rakyat.

However, the conference which was supposed to resume for the afternoon was again postponed when all the ministers present were ordered to undergo screening tests after the two Members of Parliament were found to be positive with Covid-19 since Monday.
