A local NGO is calling out individuals who report stray dogs to the authorities, highlighting the grim reality that captured animals are often euthanised after a set period.

The Street Animal Rescuers Association Bintulu (SARA) took to their Facebook page to urge the public to refrain from reporting strays to local councils. They emphasised that these dogs roam the streets simply because they have nowhere else to go.

SARA wrote:

“They are already called street dogs. Just because they are on the street, people complain incessantly. In the end, where are they supposed to go? People truly love to complain.

“Do you think they are sent to a better place after being captured? After a certain amount of time, they are disposed of!”

The association added:

“To those who are quick to complain, we have just one thing to say: these animals deserve to live just as much as we do. We share this earth together. There is no need to be mean-spirited by reporting them.”

A plea for “orange-tagged” dogs

While SARA acknowledged that local authorities are simply doing their jobs, they expressed hope that officers would leave dogs wearing orange tags on their collars alone, as these animals are often part of monitored programmes.

Trap, Neuter, Release

SARA explained that they are currently launching a Trap, Neuter, and Release (TNR) initiative to manage the stray population humanely. However, the success of the project depends heavily on financial support.

“In truth, we are still seeking funds, because TNR cannot be successful without adequate funding. We hope everyone understands that we are doing our best to manage this situation,” they added.

If you are interested in donating to their cause, you can do so here.
