A foul smell engulfing an apartment block led to the discovery of 41 cat carcasses in a residential unit in Subang Jaya on Wednesday (8 April). It is believed that the cats died due to neglect, though authorities managed to rescue 36 others found in critical condition.

According to reports by Kosmo! and Berita Harian, the premises were used as an unofficial animal shelter that had been left filthy and unkempt. The animal carcasses were found in cages and strewn across the living room floor without food or water. Notably, 31 of the carcasses had been wrapped in plastic and stored in a freezer.

Severe neglect and poor conditions

The 36 rescued cats were severely dehydrated, emaciated, and riddled with infections caused by an environment contaminated with faeces.

It is understood that an individual had rented the residential unit with the intention of saving stray animals but was likely overwhelmed when the situation spiralled out of control, leading to the animals’ deaths and neglect.

A heartbreaking scene

A spokesperson for an animal rescue group shared that the scene was devastating; most of the surviving cats were traumatised and too weak to move. These survivors have since been moved to veterinary clinics and temporary shelters to undergo intensive care and rehabilitation.

This case is currently being investigated by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) and the police under the Animal Welfare Act 2015. If convicted, perpetrators could face a hefty fine, imprisonment, or both for animal cruelty and neglect.
