If you’re planning to delve into the world of Korean home-cooked food, it’s important to have high-quality essential ingredients and products to cook up a storm with. You can’t go wrong with getting ingredients from one of Korea’s longest-running food brands: bibigo.

1. Korean Stir-fried Ramyun: Upgraded low-effort meal!

No time or brain energy to cook? Instead of a mere instant Ramyun meal, elevate it with some vegetables and other pantry staple ingredients to make Korean Stir-Fried Ramyun.

Ingredients (for 2 servings)

  • 2 packets of instant Ramyun, plus dried vegetable mix + seasoning powder
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 1 Bok Choy, blanched
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp light soy sauce
  • 2 tsp vinegar
  • Sesame seeds

Steps

  1. Cook your Ramyun in boiling water for about 3 minutes or just before al dente, then add the dried vegetable mix.
  2. Set 1/2 cup of the Ramyun water aside and drain the rest.
  3. Create stir-fry sauce by mixing the seasoning powder with soy sauce, vinegar, and some of the Ramyun water. Add water gradually until saucy.
  4. Heat up cooking oil in a pan and cook the eggs to a hard scramble, then set them aside.
  5. Add sesame oil to the pan and stir-fry garlic and bok choy, then toss in Ramyun and stir-fry sauce.
  6. Add soy sauce and vinegar if necessary, and garnish with sesame seeds for serving.

 

2. Manduguk: Elevate your Korean dumplings

Transform your favourite Mandus into a hearty dish with Manduguk (soup dumplings) in less than 30 minutes! Throw in some Tteokbokki for an even heartier meal.

Ingredients (for 2 servings)

  • Anchovy stock
    • 5 cups of water
    • 10 dried anchovies, cleaned
    • 1 dried sea kelp
  • 8 to 10 Mandus of your choice
  • 1 handful or 80g sliced Tteokbokki (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 tbsp Korean soup soy sauce (Gukganjang), light soy sauce, or fish sauce
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 scallion, chopped
  • Salt to taste

Steps

  1. To prepare anchovy stock, add ingredients to a soup pot and bring to a boil. Then, simmer it for 4 to 5 minutes before removing the anchovies and sea kelp.
  2. Bring the soup back to a boil and add Mandus and Tteokbokki (optional).
  3. Simmer over medium heat until the Mandus are cooked (they’ll float when done) and the Tteokbokki are soft.
  4. Add garlic, soy or fish sauce, and salt for seasoning.
  5. Slowly swirl the eggs into the soup and gently stir a few times before leaving it to cook.
  6. Remove from the stove and add sesame oil and green onion to garnish.
  7. Add black pepper to taste, and done!

 

3. Tuna Gimbap: Handy meal on the go

Time to put your bamboo mat to good use! Gimbaps are one of the easiest ways to get all your nutrients, not to mention they’re storage-friendly and super customisable. Feel free to replace tuna with other proteins like beef bulgogi, fish cakes, and even sausages.

Ingredients (for 2 servings)

  • 2 sheets of Gim (Korean dried seaweed)
  • 1 cup of cooked rice
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • Vegetables
    • 1 bunch spinach
    • 1 cucumber, julienned
    • 1 carrot, julienned
    • 2 strips sliced pickled radish (Danmuji)
    • 2 strips burdock roots (Ueong)
  • Tuna mayo
    • 2 canned tuna
    • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
    • Salt and pepper to taste

Steps

  • To make spinach banchan
    1. Rinse and parboil the spinach in boiling water for 30 seconds to 1 minute before rinsing it with cold water.
    2. Gently squeeze out excess water and mix it in a bowl with 1/8 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 tablespoon of sesame oil.
  1. Cut the cucumber and carrots into long strips and remove any seeds.
  2. For the egg, add cooking oil and spread it around a pre-heated pan before adding the beaten egg, cooking both sides well over medium heat. Set aside to cool before cutting into long slices.
  3. Drain canned tuna and mix with mayonnaise. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Mix cooked rice with 1/2 tablespoon of sesame oil and some salt.
  5. Prepare to assemble! Place one Gim shiny side down on your roller.
  6. Spread the rice on the Gim until it covers about 2/3 of the sheet. Make sure it’s spread evenly and thinly, and leave 5cm of space at the top.
  7. Fill the Gim with your vegetables, tuna mayo, and egg omelette.
  8. Roll the Gim. Dab some water on the space at the top of the seaweed if it’s not sticking together.
  9. If you have more, repeat steps 6 to 8 with the remaining ingredients.
  10. Once you’re done rolling, brush some sesame oil along the Gimbap’s surface before slicing into bite-sized pieces!

 

4. Kimchi Jjigae: The ultimate comfort food

The queen of Korean comfort food can be finished in 30 minutes flat, while serving as a nutritious accompaniment to your reliable bowl of rice. Tip: Use ‘aged’ Kimchi and its juices for great-tasting Kimchi Jjigae!

Ingredients (for 2 servings)

  • 2 cups chopped Kimchi
  • 1/4 cup Kimchi juice
  • 350g beef brisket (for maximum flavours, mix in some shank and chuck cuts)
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ tsp minced ginger
  • ½ chopped onion
  • 1 tbsp Gochujang
  • 1 tbsp Gochugaru (Korean red chilli flakes)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 1/2 cups of water or chicken stock
  • 1/2 sliced block of tofu
  • 2 chopped scallions
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Steps

  1. Turn up the heat to medium-high and add sesame oil to a pan, coating it evenly.
  2. Add beef, Kimchi, garlic, and onion to cook for 5 minutes. Lightly brown all sides of the beef without overcooking.
  3. Mix in the Kimchi juice, Gochujang, Gochugaru, and soy sauce and cook everything together for a few minutes.
  4. Pour water into the pot and bring it to a boil.
  5. Bring it down to a simmer and let it cook for 10 minutes before adding tofu slices.
  6. Let it simmer for another 20 minutes before finishing with scallions.
