It looks like the fashion industry is now taking notes from Asian homes!

Just recently, NextShark reported that Zara released their new skirt that resembles a ‘sarong‘. Well, we’re certainly flattered by their attempt!  The piece is, in their words, a flowing skirt with draped detail in the front with slit detail at the hem and a zip fastening in the back hidden along the seam.

Well, we guess there’s no need to worry about the sarong falling off anymore, then!

The best part is these skirts are selling for RM380 per skirt! Yep, you read that right, RM380 just for a plain-looking ‘sarong’!

Honestly lah, who in their right mind would buy something they could get for less than RM20?!

Obviously, this did not sit well with netizens once photos of it began to circulate. This is because the Spanish retailer soon received backlash from netizens over cultural appropriation.

FYI, cultural appropriation is a concept in sociology when the elements of another (minority) culture are used by members of a different (dominant) culture that takes away the original value of these elements.

One Twitter user wrote,

“Zara check yourself before you appropriate clothing from another culture.”

Overall, none of us are impressed by this ‘sarong‘-inspired skirt, because why would we be?

We have a variety of cheap and colourful ‘sarongs‘, so it would only be right if we supported our local businesses, right? So, Zara, nice try but maybe you should have done your research a little more before coming up with this design.

What do you guys think of Zara’s version of the ‘sarong‘? Let us know in the comments below!
