Most Malaysians know that the Malaysian parliamentary sessions are notorious for being wild and chaotic.

However, Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor probably only got his wake-up call about how bad the situation is when he received a surprising question from a Malaysian at a mamak stall.

According to Ramli, someone recognised him when he went to a mamak recently and they asked him, “YB, how’s the zoo?”

Consequently, he shared this experience with the Dewan Rakyat members and urged them to always maintain good conduct and ethics to avoid the continued negative perception the public has of Parliament.

“This reflects the negative impression people have of the Dewan Rakyat, where it’s commonly referred to as a ‘zoo’ on social media due to the behavior of certain MPs.”

“I urge everyone to maintain good behavior while at the Dewan Rakyat, pay attention to the Speakers, and avoid having small meetings that may disrupt proceedings,” he said.

He said, according to Article 41(e) of the Rules of the Dewan Rakyat Meeting, when a member is speaking, all other members must remain silent and must not interrupt in a less civilized manner.

Previously, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also advised Members of Parliament (MP) to behave themselves during parliamentary sessions to avoid being laughed at by the people.
