A pair of RM79 slippers have been scrutinised by the public for claims of religious exploitation and capitalism. The slippers, which were introduced by Fipper in collaboration with celebrity entrepreneur, Neelofa, were criticised for being marketed as “Muslim-friendly.”

On Monday, 5 April, Neelofa posted an Instagram story of a presentation for the Fipper x TheNoor by Neelofa slippers.

The presentation claims that the slippers are “Muslim-friendly”, which led to backlash on social media with users questioning what exactly makes a pair of slippers wearable in Islamic terms.

However, Fipper Slipper has made a statement to clarify the misunderstanding.

The company explained the slip-on sandals just means that they can be used by those who wear socks.

The company also said all its previous products, which are slippers, supposedly do not fit the image of a Muslim woman.

“The Fipper x TheNoor slip-ons are suitable for Muslim women who wear socks since our previous products were less suitable with a ‘muslimah’ image,”

The company then apologised for the confusion that the label had caused.

However, this did not stop the backlash as many netizens pointed out that not all Muslim women wear socks, nor are they required to do so.

Plus, there are non-Muslim men and women who would wear socks with their sandals. Hence, calling it “Muslim-friendly” was totally uncalled for, some netizens commented.
