Local and international news has been abuzz in the past 24 hours after former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that “Muslims have a right to be angry and to kill millions of French people for the massacres of the past”.

He said this in response to French President, Emmanuel Macron’s discriminatory remarks which labelled “Islam as a crisis in the world”. Tun M’s statement on Twitter has since been hidden for “violating Twitter rules about glorifying violence.”

While Malaysia and the world has a lot to express about his statement, Datuk Seri Najib Razak has some comments of his own on the matter at hand.

In a Tweet posted on 30 October, the former president of UMNO said that “the world should calm down and read Tun M’s statement in its full context.”

“I’m sure he didn’t mean exactly what he said. And even if he did, it’s his personal opinion not Malaysia’s,” Najib said.

Najib then added that “someone should take away all his (Tun M’s) social media accounts before he does more damage”.

Meanwhile, even though Tun M’s statement might appear shocking, he added that he does not condone killing and Muslims don’t apply the “eye for an eye” perspective.

“Muslims don’t. The French shouldn’t. Instead, the French should teach their people to respect other people’s feelings,” Tun M said in a series of Tweets.

What do you think of this? Let us know in the comments below.
