As the debate as to whether students should be allowed to return to schools during a global pandemic continues, the Philippines government appears to have already decided what the best course of action would be.

In a recent update from our South-East Asian neighbours, it would seem that President Duerte has decided on an incredibly drastic decision, given the current circumstances that have ravaged the world.

While Filipino schoolchildren were expected to resume in-person classes by sometime in the end of August as reported by NST, a recent speech by the President now changes all that.

During his speech, the President has now decided that schools across the country will not be allowed to open until a viable vaccine is found to safeguard the health of the children, reports CNA.

“Unless I am sure that they are really safe it’s useless to be talking about opening of classes,” the president said.

“For me, vaccine first. If the vaccine is already there, then it’s okay,” he added. “If no one graduates, then so be it.”

While this may be a good measure to ensure that the virus doesn’t spread among schoolchildren who will often congregate together in school premises, many have wondered how long students will be expected to stay home, as no viable vaccines have yet been found anywhere in the world.

What do you guys think of this decision?
