A middle school in Xinyang, Henan, China called on some of their students to smash their mobile phones with a hammer after their parents complained that their children were not focusing on their studies.

In a video circulating on the Internet, several students can be seen standing on a small stage and smashing their mobile phones with a hammer in front of the whole school.

This sparked heated discussions among netizens, but the school’s principal justified this action by saying that the school was only cooperating with the request of two parents who wanted their children’s phones destroyed.

The principal explained that exam season was near and some parents reported that their children would play with their phones when they returned home and that they could not control their kids.

In order to teach their kids a lesson, the parents wrote a ‘letter of commitment’, allowing the school to smash their children’s mobile phones, which the students agreed to, reported Oriental Daily.

Netizens had mixed reactions to this, with some saying that the parents’ actions were understandable as it was exam season and that they need “extraordinary means to achieve extraordinary results”.

However, others said that the parents were not dealing with the root of the problem and that there was nothing wrong with mobile phones. Some netizens blamed the parents for not teaching their children how to control their usage of mobile phones.
