Who said dialysis is just for humans? Even pets need it too, especially those with serious kidney conditions.
With veterinary hemodialysis (CRRT) services now available in Malaysia, and with support from Royal Canin, pet owners and vets can access a new advanced treatment option to provide better care for critically ill dogs and cats.
Read on and see why this is big news for fur parents in Malaysia:
1. A new advanced lifeline for dogs and cats
Veterinary Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) is an advanced form of blood purification designed to support dogs and cats when their kidneys are severely compromised or when harmful toxins build up in the bloodstream.
How does it work? It gently filters the blood through a specialised machine to remove waste products, excess fluid, and harmful toxins, giving the veterinary team time to treat the underlying problem.
In some poisoning cases, dialysis or similar blood-purification treatments may help remove toxins from the bloodstream more quickly.
However, CRRT isn’t suitable for every patient or toxin, so each case requires thorough evaluation by the veterinary medical team.
Veterinarians may consider CRRT for selected pets facing critical conditions such as:
- Severe acute kidney injury
- Rapidly worsening kidney disease
- Dangerously high levels of waste in the blood
- Little to no urine production
- Life-threatening fluid overload
- Severe electrolyte or acid-base imbalances
- Certain toxic poisonings and drug overdoses
While we hope our fur babies will never need it, knowing that CRRT is now available in Malaysia gives pawparents and veterinarians an advanced lifeline when facing severe kidney emergencies or critical toxicities.
2. Launching a new lifeline for pets
CRRT was officially unveiled during “A New Lifeline for Our Furkids”, a special educational gathering from Lee Veterinary Clinic and Vet Partners Malaysia that brought together pet families, veterinarians, and veterinary healthcare partners @ Colony Coworking Space, KLCC on 17 October.
Aside from serving as a launchpad for the first CRRT in Malaysia, the get-together aimed to empower pet parents with insights into kidney health, severe renal disease, and critical poisonings via sharing sessions from the likes of Dr Lee Wai Wai, founder of the Lee Veterinary Clinic (“When the Kidneys Stop: A New Option for Malaysia’s Pets”), and Dr Dylan Choy Siew Fen, Senior Health Affairs Manager of Royal Canin Malaysia (“More Good Days: Kidney Nutrition & Longevity”).
Numerous partner booths were present to support the event too, including Royal Canin. The pet food manufacturer not only provided essential education on renal illness and poisoning risks, but also gave away free Royal Canin Renal dry food packs, formulated to support cats and dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and renal insufficiency.
After all, at-home care matters just as much as veterinarian care. Giving our pets the right pet food plays a major role in their kidney health, which is where Royal Canin Renal comes in. Their specially formulated dry and wet food series is specifically designed and approved by scientific experts in cat and dog nutrition, with low phosphorus, antioxidants, and high-quality moderate protein to support your pet’s kidney health.
3. Giving your fur babies the kidney care they need
The newfound availability of CRRT veterinary hemodialysis service is a big leap forward in Malaysian pet healthcare. As Dr Tan Check Nam, CEO of Vet Partners Malaysia, shared, introducing CRRT is about elevating Malaysia’s veterinary standards, expanding what local clinics can achieve, and ensuring vets have the critical-care tools needed to save lives right here at home.
“This is not just a technological achievement. It represents hope for more families, more treatment possibilities for our veterinary teams, and a new level of care for our beloved companions.”
For cats and dogs with critical kidney illness or life-threatening poisoning, CRRT serves as a vital supportive bridge, giving veterinarians an additional level of care to stabilise patients and treat underlying conditions.
Following its official launch, the CRRT veterinary hemodialysis service is set to become available to appropriately selected dogs and cats upon clinical evaluation, with availability details to follow.
