At fast food restaurants, do you clear your own tables after you’re done, or do you leave it to the employees to clean after you?

A video on TikTok has recently gone viral, and it shows 2 men enjoying their meal at a McDonald’s restaurant with a caption that says,

“Why do we need to clear the tables when we have paid service tax of 6%?”

The clip has gained the attention of Aina, who works in the F&B sector, and who has clarified the difference between service tax and service charge.

“We’re actually not paid to clean your tables”

In her TikTok video, Aina told customers of fast food restaurants to take a look at the receipts during their next visit, as fast food chains only charge service tax and not service charge.

“We’re paid to prepare your food, not to clean your tables,” Aina emphasised.

She then pointed out the differences at other restaurants such as The Chicken Rice Shop and K Fry Korean Restaurant where customers are expected to pay service charge of 10%.

“That’s why those places take your orders at your table, serve you food, and clean your tables when you’re done. This does not happen at fast food joints.”

Aina then explained that service tax is paid to the government, instead of the employees of restaurants. She also said that even if the restaurants do impose a service charge, the customers can at least stack the plates properly and neatly.

Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Aina said that her explanation in the video applies to customers who visit fast food chains and is not meant to those who visit other eateries, such as Thai restaurants.

Do you clear your own tables before leaving fast food restaurants? Do you agree with Aina’s take on this matter?
