Microsoft CEO Meets with Anwar in Putrajaya, Announces Record RM10.5 BILLION Investment in M’sia

After previously postponing his 1st-ever official visit to Malaysia due to unforeseen circumstances, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella today finally visited our shores and officiated the Microsoft Build: AI Day in Kuala Lumpur.

Making several key announcements during the event, including Microsoft’s largest-ever investment in our country, Satya and his delegation also took the time to meet with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya before the event.

 

Microsoft CEO announces record RM10.5 billion investment in Malaysia

In a press release, Microsoft announced that it will invest USD2.2 billion or approximately RM10.5 billion over the next 4 years to support Malaysia’s digital transformation.

The statement added that the investment is the single largest investment by Microsoft in its 32-year history in Malaysia. 

The tech giant asserted that the investments would include:

  • Building cloud and AI infrastructures in Malaysia
  • Creating AI skilling opportunities for an additional 200,000 people in Malaysia
  • Strengthening its partnership with the Government of Malaysia to establish a national AI Centre of Excellence and enhance the nation’s cybersecurity capabilities
  • Supporting the growth of Malaysia’s developer community

Microsoft stressed that the investment showcases its commitment to developing Malaysia as a hub for cloud computing and related advanced technologies, including generative AI.

Microsoft said that the investment will support Malaysia’s productivity, competitiveness, resilience and economic growth.

Satya asserted,

“We are committed to supporting Malaysia’s AI transformation and ensure it benefits all Malaysians.

“Our investments in digital infrastructure and skilling will help Malaysian businesses, communities and developers apply the latest technology to drive inclusive economic growth and innovation across the country,”

 

Prime Minister lauds Microsoft investment, claims it showcases Malaysia’s political stability

In a Facebook post, Anwar lauded Microsoft’s investment in Malaysia, saying that our country welcomes the tech giant’s decision to invest in our country.

He added that the investment showcases Microsoft’s trust in our nation’s strong economic base, clear and focused policies, in addition to investor friendliness and political stability.

The Prime Minister added that the investment is in line with the Government’s focus on developing our nation’s AI capacity.
