In many Asian countries, traditional beauty standards have resulted in an illusion that the whiter your skin, the more attractive you are. This has proven to be extremely harmful as the unrealistic beauty standards have often resulted in people investing in a lot of treatment in order to get their desired skin colour.

However, we should always be proud of ourselves and work hard to love ourselves just the way we are.

Recently, Malaysian actress Nabila Huda took to Twitter share her thoughts on women’s obsession with skin-whitening products.

The actress took to Twitter to express some of her opinions regarding Malay women who are obsessed with whitening their skin to become fairer.

In her tweet she wrote, “Our natural skin colour shows our true beauty. Brown sugar (skin colour) is sexy you know. I love my skin so much and I am so proud of it.”

She then went on to warn others about the dangers of excessive use of skin-whitening products. “What if your skin turns grey when you’re old due to the effects of expired products?” she said as she reminded women not to be influenced by what they see or read on social media.

“We are beautiful in our own way! Just be (yourself) and love yourself more.”

“If every Malay woman who has brown skin turns their skin white, we would lose our uniqueness as a Malay woman,” she added.

She concluded her series of posts on the matter by saying, “To be honest, our brown skin is the easiest to take care of. All you need is to take care of it for it to remain healthy and glow. Brown skin is more beautiful especially when seen under the sun where it turns golden brown!”

Thank you for being an inspiration

Her fans and fellow netizens has since thanked her for her series of tweets and for inspiring us to love ourselves no matter how we look.

“It’s also prevalent in the Indian community in Malaysia too. I’m brown and I love my skin colour!”

“As I grew older, I can see clearly that my brown skin is beautiful. Now I appreciate my skin more and I love it,” commented another user.

Another user said, “White doesn’t equate to beautiful and dark doesn’t mean it’s ugly. I am totally proud of my tanned skin tone.”

It’s encouraging to see famous figures such as Nabila Huda reminding women to love and embrace their natural beauty and not to simply strive for what is considered as traditionally beautiful.
