An act of kindness seems pretty rare these days, and we have no idea how a little act of goodwill can make someone’s day.

Recently, a Malaysian, Chiew Wei got inspired to help an uncle brace through the day simply by purchasing a fruit rojak from the latter. Chiew visited Skudai, Johor to meet his clients but decided to grab himself a snack, and that was when he spotted the rojak stall by the road. He parked his car near the stall, ordered a portion of rojak from the uncle, and politely asked him to send over the snack to his car, to which the uncle agreed.

However, Chiew changed his mind when he witnessed a scene that made him feel bad.

“I saw the uncle delivering the rojak to me with his crutches.”

He immediately rolled down his car window and told the uncle that he would’ve waited at his stall if he knew about his condition. The uncle, however, assured Chiew that it was okay.

The rojak is sold at RM7 per portion, and when Chiew wanted to pay the uncle, he realised that he had no small change, and neither did the uncle, who told Chiew that he would walk to the shop in front of him to get smaller notes. Chiew stopped him and told the uncle that he would do that instead.

“The uncle then told me that I can pay him the next time I purchase from him again.”

Chiew then decided to pay RM50 so that the uncle could keep the change. He initially rejected it, but Chiew convinced him to accept the extra cash. RM50 for an RM7 rojak, was it worth it?

Chiew said the smile on the uncle’s face made it worth the price.

“We don’t know to know each other to help each other”

The purchase has taught Chiew many lessons, including how we can offer help to strangers, especially the disabled uncle who is trying to make a living.

“We can still feel warmth and kindness when helping strangers. The uncle reminds me of my grandfather,” Chiew said.

In his Facebook post, Chiew also assured the people that he was not trying to show off but merely pointing out that one act of kindness can make someone’s day.

“I’m not a saint, but one act of kindness and a smile can make the world a beautiful place.”

Amidst the chaos, Chiew was right. One act of kindness can go a long way and restore faith in humanity. In this kindness-deprived world, one act of goodwill from each and every one of us can make the world a beautiful place for us.
