While some Malaysians are preparing for the upcoming monsoon season with possible floods and a general election, others such as those in Sarawak have already begun to feel the wrath of mother nature.

After days of heavy rainfall, the cities of Miri and Sibu are now submerged in floor waters, disrupting residents’ lives and causing other disasters such as landslides.

One landslide has reportedly occurred at Jalan Peninjau, causing the road to be blocked by soil and plants.

Whereas on Jalan Kampung Kejapil heading towards Beraya, a massive landslide has caused the entire road to collapse due to the soil beneath it giving way.

In Miri, the affected areas are Kampung Subak, Kampung Tiris and Kampung Pintasan in Bekenu where water levels rose to about 3-4 feet.

According to Miri District Civil Defence Officer Lt. (PA) Mirwan Shah Masri, water levels show no sign of receding.

“However, daily routines are still able to be carried out as normal and the situation is still safe and under control.”

In videos of the incident, flood waters in some areas were still very swift, causing cars to slow down as they moved.

Whereas in Sibu, floodwater levels are up to 2-4 feet deep.

According to Sibu District Civil Defence Office Captain (PA) Frankie John Jawan, the high tide and water from upstream of the Rajang River were factors that caused several low-lying areas in Sibu to become flooded.

These incidents are a reminder that the monsoon season is fast approaching and everyone needs to work together to mitigate its effects.

Hopefully, the damage done to the flood victims in Sarawak is not too severe.
