Remember the viral story of the stateless woman Rohana Abdullah that melted the heart of Malaysians due to the selfless love of her 83-year-old adoptive ‘Laoshi’? Well, not only has she finally received her citizenship, but now, the 22-year-old woman is also able to achieve her dreams of pursuing a higher education thanks to an offer by Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM)!

As reported by Bernama, Rohana who just obtained Malaysian citizenship and an identity card accepted the study offer and said that she will work hard to complete her studies with excellence so that she can contribute back to the local community. An elated Rohana asserted,

“I don’t know how to say ‘thank you’… I am very grateful for the gift God has given me because this is something I have been dreaming about for a long time. Thank you also to UTEM. Although I am more interested in the field of medicine, computer science is my second choice and Laoshi is also supportive of it. So I will do my best to repay her,”

Rohana personally received her study offer letter from UTeM vice-chancellor Professor Dr Massila Kamalrudin at her adoptive mother’s house at Batu 5, Jalan Ipoh in Kuala Lumpur today. She will be registering her admission to the University on Monday and will be going to Melaka accompanied by her Laoshi today.
Speaking to reporters yesterday, Rohana also revealed that her Laoshi, Chee Hoi Lian who took care of her after she was left behind by her Indonesian mother as a child is sad to be away from her adoptive daughter. Rohana said,

“There are several things I need to buy and at the same time need to find help a housekeeper to take care of Laoshi when I am not around. Lately, she cries whenever she thinks of our separation. Therefore, it is better to find someone to be with her at home while waiting for my return on the weekends,”

Indeed, Chee also said that this will be the first time that she will be separated from Rohana and hopes that she will be able to look after herself well for the duration of the course. Chee asserted,
“I hope she (Rohana) will not forget me, and whenever she has free time to come back to see me. When she finishes studying, I hope she can become an internet (information technology) expert,”
