We never know when our last day on Earth would be.

For the very unfortunate Shameera Krishnan, she was brutally murdered AND mutilated on February 23, 2017 – just a day before her birthday.

Shameera was a 26-year-old transgender woman from Mentakab, Pahang, who worked as a florist. When news of her horrifying death surfaced, most of the local press disrespectfully labelled the poor woman as ‘mak nyah’.

Apparently, Shameera had gone out at about 3.30AM that fateful day to buy food and credit top-up for her prepaid phone, The Star reported.

Shameera’s cousin, V. Reenunair, 29, told the press about the attack which took place at Jalan Pasar.

“Four fingers of her right hand were severed and she had serious head injuries. Her right arm was also badly mutilated as though she had been trying to ward off repeated blows from her assailant.”

Apparently, when Reenunair and other family members were contacted regarding the incident, they thought Shameera was still alive but just terribly injured.

They rushed over to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital only to find out the shocking truth.

“We didn’t know she had died at that time. We went to the mortuary and found that she had been shot in her posterior.”

“Why would anyone hurt her like this,” the sad lady lamented. She added that the deceased had never once complained about being disturbed by anyone.

Shameera was born as K. Selamperasan, a male. But about 7 to 8 years ago, she decided to live her life as a woman. She continued to lead a simple and peaceful life with no reported enemies.

But when news broke out about her death, many netizens were appalled by the horrible words used by the local media to describe her.

Most of the media in Malaysia described Shameera as ‘Mak Nyah’ or even ‘Pondan’.

Netizens argued in the comments section of the media’s Facebook posts.

One netizen said,

Something is terribly wrong with journalism ethics lately. ‘Transgender found dead’… ‘Mak nyah kena ditetak’. Learn to be sensitive and respect others 1st!”

Another netizen added,

“People are so rude towards transgender that they often forget that she is also human. Just because she’s a transgender, doesn’t mean she ‘deserves’ to die with no compassion.

Shameera’s funeral will be held on February 24, on her birthday in Karak Pahang, at 1PM. May she rest in peace.

The police are still investigating the case.
