Following reports from TV1 Channel’s FB post, three smugglers tried to sneak 28 Indonesian stowaways aged between 19-38-year-olds, into Malaysia via a boat at around 7.30pm in the evening yesterday (19th May). Authorities managed to catch and arrest two of the smugglers, aged 27 and 42 respectively and discovered two motorcycles on land that were to be used by the smugglers to transport the illegal immigrants underground.

Zulafendy Bin Hassan, police chief of the Batallion, said that authorities were also able to retrieve around RM41,805 in cash following further inspection once the group were brought to Banting Police Station, Kuala Langat, Selangor.

The group has been arrested and charged under the Anti-Trafficking Immigration Act 2007 and Section 6 (1) (c) Immigration Act 1963.

Since late April, the government has tightened Malaysia’s border patrols to prevent the occurrence of possible Covid-19 clusters or outbreaks coming from illegal migrants trying to enter the country. Despite the Ramadan season and Hari Raya soon approaching, authorities are still strictly abiding by these policies.

This follows yesterday’s announcement by Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri, that PDRM and ATM personnel will be deployed to patrol neighbourhoods on the first two days of Hari Raya.

Stay safe, everybody!
