We should get something straight, whether it’s a Movement Control Order or a full-blown lockdown, neither of these is just for fun. These measures are important to ensure the infection curve can be flattened thus saving the lives of more.

To ensure people abide by the MCO, the Malaysian government have imposed fines and even jail time. The Indian government, however, have taken a rather… interesting approach to make sure people obey the lockdown imposed in their country. Well, the police punished tourists who broke the lockdown by asking them to write “I Am Sorry” 500 times!

Well, if this image popped into your head, join the club!

New Straits Times reported that a group of ten foreigners were caught walking around in Rishikesh breaking lockdown. The travellers from Israel, Mexico, Australia and Austria were forced to repent by writing “I am so sorry” 500 times.

India Lockdown Punishment Write Lines

Well, their exact words were, “I did not follow the rules of lockdown so I am so sorry” which is definitely a more accurate depiction of their mistake. The nationwide lockdown was imposed near the end of March, with residents permitted to leave their homes only for essential services such as buying groceries and medicine.

Well, this is an interesting punishment indeed. Not only will you learn from your mistakes, but it’s also a good language and writing practice! What say you, would you prefer this punishment over a fine of RM1,000?
