We’ve all been there. After burning the midnight oil studying, we slowly make our way to our seats in the exam hall, ready to pour your heart, mind, and soul. We sit down, and the lecture puts the test on the table. We stare at it and poof! Our brain goes blank! We can’t even remember the lecturer’s name.

Sometimes the few moments leading up to the start of the exam are very critical. Your anxiety level directly results in how well you can answer the questions. Hence, a lecturer from Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) found an excellent way for their students to calm their nerves before answering.

How, you might ask? By teaching them how to draw a monkey, of course!

The examination paper went viral this week for displaying the steps and even providing a place for the students to doodle. On the cover, it was written,

“DO NOT OPEN THE BOOKLET UNTIL INSTRUCTED

(but while you are waiting, why not learn how to draw a monkey?)”

While undoubtedly entertaining, some joked that they might spend too much time drawing the monkey instead of actually answering the exam.

We do believe the intention behind the little drawing exercise is to help students calm themselves down and not to distract them from answering the question. I used to doodle all over the exam paper anyway when I couldn’t find the answer. So there’s no harm in trying an approach like this kan?
