Sometimes, humans can be so cruel and heartless that they can torture and kill helpless animals without feeling any remorse.

In Vietnam today (19 April), three men have been sentenced to jail for slaughtering and eating an endangered monkey, the red-shanked douc, while live-streaming the whole ordeal.

Phan Van Hoi, 33, and Thai Dinh Quy, 58, were each sentenced to one year in prison while Thai Kim Hong, 51, received a 15-month sentence in a trial in Ha Tinh province’s Huong Khe District People’s Court on Wednesday (18 April) for “violating regulations on the protection of precious and rare wild animals”.

The Straits Times reported that three other men, Phan Trong Son, 45, Thai Vinh Quang, 59, and Thai Van Sang, 41, also received suspended one-year sentences.

This group of men had begun committing this gruesome act in November 2018 when Hoi live-streamed them killing and eating the raw brain of the monkey that Son had sold to Hong. This is because some people in Vietnam believe that eating the brain of an animal imparts intelligence. What?!

The footage went viral on Facebook and Vietnam’s local media, provoking the public to protest in the country. The clip has since been removed, but has already been downloaded by many people.

Native to Vietnam and Cambodia, the red-shanked douc is a protected species under Vietnamese law.

The poor monkey! Let’s just hope this species of monkey does not become extinct. 🙁
