Smugglers have often resorted to creative ways in order to smuggle prohibited items in and out of the country.

Recently, a video of a Perodua Kancil on fire at a petrol station went viral as it nearly caused the petrol station in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan to explode.

According to Astro Awani, the car was allegedly used to smuggle subsidised diesel and gasoline fuel into Thailand but suddenly caught on fire at the petrol station at 8:35 am.

Fortunately no one was harmed, but the owner of the car managed to escape and is now missing.

The Kancil suffered about 50% destruction while the oil pump and its nozzles were totally burned.

Cause of the incident

Pasir Mas police chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Nasaruddin M. Nasir said that investigations revealed that there was a plastic barrel in the car which was suspected to be used to refuel for smuggling purposes.

“As a result of interviews with pump workers at the petrol station, they claimed to have seen a fire burning from under the car whilst the man was filling petrol at pump No. 7.”

“The fire then spread to the back of the car whilst the man proceeded to flee. Witnesses also informed that there was no element of treachery that caused the fire, ” he added.

“A total of 6 members from BBP Rantau Panjang rushed to the location for extinguishing and rescue work. We took 3 minutes to control the fire,” he said.
