On 6 September, a 20-year-old military comrade, Abdul Aziz Aznam, from the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) was reported to have passed away at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital (HSNI) in Batu Pahat, Johor. The soldier allegedly attempted to commit suicide by jumping off from a third-floor of a military camp residential building on 29 August.

Family members have since spoken up that the soldier was bullied and abused before the horrible incident occurred. A member of his family clarified that he complained that he was often punched and his cheeks were rubbed with an iron brush.

They further continued that last January, the victim came back from the military camp to his family in Ipoh, Perak looking disoriented and his face was littered with scars.

According to Berita Harian, a family member stated that the victim couldn’t handle the “ragging” imposed on him and would often run away to his home looking completely disordered. He once showed pictures of old bruises across his body and said that he could no longer tolerate the treatment he received in the military.

When the deceased received an order to come back to the military base on 28 August, he looked healthy according to his family. However, they got a call from a military officer informing that the victim was in a critical condition after falling off from the residential building.

They rushed to the ICU ward in the hospital and found out that the victim has sustained severe head and chest injuries.

After his death, the soldier’s family members lodged a report for a further investigation and they expect the military members at the ATM to take responsibility since they have neglected one of their comrades.
