Animals have strong motherly instincts and it is only normal for mums to be protective of their children.

A mother dog was reported to have attacked humans because these people snatched her newborn puppies. According to Sin Chew Daily, this cruel incident happened a couple of days ago in Sandakan, Sabah. The person who got injured was treated in the hospital and is currently in a stable condition.

The president of the Sandakan Municipal Council, Wong Foo Tin, mentioned that the council had no choice but to put the dog down.

He further explained that this dog was “endangering the people’s safety”, thus, after discussions with the police, they decided to let the police shoot the dog.

Understanding how it was reasonable of the mother dog to turn aggressive right after witnessing her puppies being snatched away, Wong said that this incident would not happen to a dog that is well-taken care of.

“I am fully aware that certain animal welfare organisations, especially SPCA Sandakan, will oppose the council’s decision, but I have to say that we were being forced to do so (kill).”

Wong went on to explain that the council had always followed the protocol of using tranquillizer guns to anaesthetise the stray dogs that are aggressive or with infectious diseases. However, because this particular case had already “endangered one’s safety”, the council decided to use an old protocol, which was to shoot to death.

Apparently, the council had been executing dogs many years ago with the support of the police, but they’ve gotten a lot of complaints. So, they’ve decided to change the law and stopped killing dogs since then.

We are beyond heartbroken about this and still wish that the mother dog could live to be with her puppies. Her puppies’ whereabouts were not reported as well. Hopefully, they’re being taken care of and put up for adoption.
