Chan posted a video on his Instagram account (@pschan88) on Friday (13 December), announcing that he is experiencing paralysis on the left side of his face.

The mixed double’s player explained that he was already undergoing this issue for the past few days when he was at a competition, and he didn’t play well at the BWF World Tour Finals that was held in Guangzhou, China.

“I have no feelings on the left side of my face as I am speaking right now. Half of my face muscles can’t be controlled, and it is affecting my speaking, as well as my left eye. My left eyelid can’t be closed properly.”

He then went on to explain that this condition was also affecting his performance at the competition.

“Because I can’t close my left eye, beads of sweat would drip into my eye, affecting my vision. It felt really uncomfortable.”

Although it was difficult for him to accept the fact that he’s suffering from this medical condition, he had reassured everyone that he will go for treatments and do his best to recover.

FYI, Bell’s palsy is a condition where the muscles on one side of your face become weak or paralysed. It usually only affects one side of the face at a time, and the affected side will droop and become stiff. The cause of this condition is damage to the facial nerve, and it can happen to anyone.

Let’s hope for a speedy recovery for Chan, so that he will be able to return to the badminton courts soon!
