Hoping to avoid repeating the same mistake, an elderly Malaysian man has sought help from Duyong State Assemblyman (ADUN) Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abd Halem ahead of the upcoming Merdeka celebrations.
Taking to TikTok, Mohd Noor Helmy shared that he visited 88-year-old George Lim at his home after receiving several calls from the elderly man, who was worried that the Jalur Gemilang he planned to put up might be displayed incorrectly.

Elderly Malaysian’s Merdeka spirit remains strong despite past mistake
In the video, George explained that he reached out to Mohd Noor Helmy because he was still worried after a previous incident where he accidentally displayed the Jalur Gemilang upside down.
He also shared that his Merdeka spirit has never faded, saying he has celebrated Merdeka and put up the national flag at his home every year without fail.
“When it comes to Merdeka, my spirit is always strong. If other people don’t want to put up flags at their homes, that’s up to them. But as for me, I’ll continue putting it up every year,” George said.

He’s still traumatised after accidentally hanging the flag upside down
Later in the video, George could be heard asking Mohd Noor Helmy to confirm whether the flag should be hung on the left or right side, to which he hilariously replied:
“It doesn’t matter if it’s on the left or right, as long as you don’t hang it upside down again.”

While the previous incident clearly left an impact on George, his spirit to continue flying the Jalur Gemilang at home has never faded.
“He called me more than five times to make sure the Jalur Gemilang he was going to put up would not be displayed incorrectly like before. Although the previous incident of displaying the flag upside down left him traumatised, his spirit to continue putting up the flag at home remains strong, and that is something worth praising,” Mohd Noor Helmy said, as quoted by Berita Harian.
