The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) are investigating possible negligence and sabotage in connection with a roller coaster incident at Sunway Lagoon that left 10 guests injured on 22 August.

Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the investigation was being conducted in collaboration with several agencies, with each focusing on areas within their respective expertise and jurisdiction.

Two victims remain hospitalised

He said other agencies, including the Fire and Rescue Department and the Selangor Department of Occupational Safety and Health (JKKP), were also investigating, particularly the attraction’s technical aspects.

“In the end, we will sit down and discuss the findings to determine the actual cause,” he said in a press conference at the Selangor Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) today.

Shazeli said two of the 10 injured guests remained in hospital for treatment, although neither suffered serious injuries.

“The other victims have been discharged, while some received treatment as outpatients,” he said, according to Harian Metro.

The roller coaster has been temporarily shut down while investigators determine exactly what went wrong. Police have also recorded statements from several parties, including the attraction’s operators and staff, the injured guests and other individuals believed to have relevant information.

What did Sunway Lagoon’s management say?

The investigation follows a statement from the theme park’s management expressing regret over the incident and stressing that guests’ safety and well-being remain its highest priority.

“Sunway Theme Park takes this matter extremely seriously.”

“We remain firmly committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety across our attractions and facilities, and to ensuring the wellbeing and confidence of all our guests.”
