Mass fish deaths were reported at Pantai Lido, Johor Bharu raising questions of rampant pollution in the area.
With water analysis reports surfacing last August suggesting that there are high ammonia and phosphate content in the water, the latest reports reported by Facebook page The Reporter also suggests that the cause may be due to the change in water flow in the area.Pictures of dead fish in the area witnessed here is certainly alarming, what more with members of the public themselves witnessing carcasses of fish nearby the Hospital Sultanah Aminah. In its status, it also writes of how oxygen levels in the surrounding area have also dropped to 1.2 ppm which may lead to the death of marine life in the area.
The Johor Fisheries Department Zamani Omar said that the situation can be worse if domestic wastewater is also ejected into waterways of surrounding areas.
“In the long run, more efficient irrigation routes should be constructed to facilitate the flow of water in and out according to the tide.”
“This will prevent domestic waste from accumulating at one place and affecting the quality of the water for aquatic life.”
We urge local authorities to begin taking action and ensure that such an incident do not repeat itself in the future.
