As long as your job pays your bills and doesn’t harm anyone, does it really matter how society perceives the quality of some careers? A 26-year-old Malaysian man recently shocked an elderly woman who judged the book by its cover.

In his viral X post @QamarulQashroff, the 26-year-old man shared that he was working at the cashier in a restaurant in Cheras, KL when a Mak Cik approached him to settle the bill. It turned into a “quick interrogation” when the elderly woman asked about his age.

“You’re 26 years old and you’re still a cashier?”

Little did she know, Qamarul is more than just a cashier.

“I’m the owner of this restaurant.”

The young business owner was baffled at the Mak Cik’s perception of his job but he kept all his thoughts to himself which were then expressed in his X post.

“Am I not allowed to be JUST a cashier if I’m 26 years old? I guess the Mak Cik believes all men must make at least RM9K every month.”

Qamarul also sarcastically “thanked” the woman, saying because of customers like her, he can travel anywhere he wants thanks to the money he makes.

“Thanks to you, Mak Cik, I can travel and see the world at this age. I’m living my childhood dream.”

Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Qamarul, also fondly known as Arul said the Mak Cik went silent after finding out about his “true identity”, and he just mentally laughed about the conversation. According to him, he’s also not a new player in town when it comes to the F&B industry.

“I’ve been working for quite a long time because this is actually a family business.”

Arul also told WORLD OF BUZZ that the business has been passed down for generations and as of now, the family runs 2 different outlets in KL.

“The one where the incident took place was in Cheras, which has been opened to public for 2 months now.”

Even if Arul was only the cashier, it doesn’t matter at all. Those who work in the F&B industry will be aware of how much business owners can make in a month, especially if business is booming.

To our friends in similar field, have you encountered such a perception from the customers?
