The Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) will lead Perikatan Nasional (PN), following the resignation of former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the party’s chairman, effective yesterday (1 January).

This was confirmed by PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.

But who will take over the role of PN Chairman?

According to Hadi, PAS has yet to confirm who will replace Muhyiddin as PN Chairman. After Muhyiddin stepped down, many of the coalition leaders, including Dato’ Seri Azmin Ali and Dato’ Seri Faizal Azumu, also announced their resignation from their respective posts.

BERNAMA reported that a meeting to discuss the next PN chairman will be held on an unspecified date next week. Hadi also stated that BERSATU members are expected to attend the meeting, and hinted at the presence of those leaders who had stepped down from their roles.

“The leaders who had resigned, it’s up to them if they want to attend the meeting or not,” the PAS President told the reporters this morning (2 January) at Masjid Rusila in Marang, Terengganu.

Previously, Hadi declined any proposals for him to become the Prime Minister, citing age and health factors, explaining that he is no longer suited for the demanding role. Similarly, Hadi maintained the same stance when asked if he would lead PN, as suggested by several other parties.

Hadi, who is the Marang Member of Parliament (MP), also said that PAS has a lot of candidates among religious figures and technocrats. However, he remains tight-lipped on the identities of the candidates who will be mentioned soon.

Muhyiddin urges BERSATU members to remain disciplined

In a statement this morning, Muhyiddin said that despite no longer leading PN, he is still the BERSATU chairman, one of the component parties in PN.

“I urge all BERSATU members to remain steadfast, disciplined, and uphold a culture of mutual respect, as well as to resolve any differences wisely, maturely, and discreetly in the interest of the party,” he said.

Who do you think will chair PN next? Do you have a candidate in mind?
