Former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has tendered his resignation as Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman, effective 1 January 2026.

In a statement today (30 December), Muhyiddin announced the decision and thanked the entire PN leadership for their full support during his tenure leading the coalition since its inception five years ago.

Earlier, Muhyiddin’s resignation was confirmed by PAS Information Chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari in a Facebook post. In the post, Fadhli, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Pasir Mas, praised Muhyiddin for his openness and lauded the move to resign as a wise and timely decision.

He asserted, “Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has expressed his intention to resign as the Chairman of Perikatan Nasional, effective 1 January 2026. This is a wise and timely move by Tan Sri, as PN requires fresh momentum ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16).”

Meanwhile, local media reported that Muhyiddin’s resignation as PN Chairman was also confirmed by BERSATU Secretary-General Datuk Seri Azmin Ali and BERSATU Information Chief Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz.

Muhyiddin, who is also the Pagoh MP, reportedly informed the BERSATU leadership of his decision via the party’s Supreme Council WhatsApp group at 10:30 PM yesterday (29 December).

The decision comes amidst growing tension between BERSATU and fellow PN component party, PAS, following the Perlis political crisis.
