A lot of people move to big cities such as KL to get a job and make a living. However, many of us start to feel the burn of the hustle when the excitement wears off and oftentimes, we might even think about moving to a secluded village for a simple life.

Recently on the Chinese social media platform Douyin, a young man who was born after the 2000’s named Wenzi has shared how he “moved” to a bamboo shed in the mountains.

According to See Hua Daily, Wenzi built a bamboo shed on the edge of a hillside cliff in Xiaxi, Wanshan, Guizhou, and he has been calling it his home since September 2023.

Now, his real home is only about 500 to 600 metres away but due to how rough the mountain roads are, it takes him an hour by foot to reach his reclusive shed. He makes this trip every fortnight to go to the market, buy groceries and stock up on necessities.

Other times, he is there in the shed growing vegetables, rearing pigs and making videos for his Douyin account.

Speaking about life in the mountains, he says that he does not feel lonely as he has 2 dogs that are always by his side.

Many netizens have said that his “reclusive life” may be a farce but Wenzi has said that it’s not true.

“I am not completely isolated from the world, I do go back home every fortnight. Saying that I am retiring into the mountains may be clickbaity on my side but living in the house I built on the mountains is ideal and I love it.”

Before this, Wenzi was a blue-collar worker who did not finish his high school education. For work, he had maintained cars and worked in a construction site and a garment factory. A few years in, he was already sick of seeing machines and decided that he would move back home.

He also commented on the netizens’ remarks that said he was not doing much with life by saying:

“My life is fulfilling every day, and it is not easier than going to work, it is just a different lifestyle.”

The young man had set a year-long goal for himself and if he isn’t able to see any fruits from that, he will be going back to the city to work.

What do you think about this? Let us know in the comments.
