Recently, a reader named Jay (name altered for privacy reasons) reached out to WORLD OF BUZZ to share an incident that he had encountered with a lecturer from his college in Kuala Lumpur.
Lecturer would ask for contacts of the victim’s friends
Jay, a 19-year-old student exclusively told WORLD OF BUZZ that a male lecturer in his college has been making multiple sexual remarks and suggestions throughout their conversations on WhatsApp. According to Jay, his lecturer, Mr D, would even try to get him to share the phone numbers of his other guy friends.
He added that this has been going on since 16 May 2021 and he is only choosing to speak up publicly as his college failed to help him when he tried to report the incident.
Lusting over younger men
Through the screenshots that Jay provided to WORLD OF BUZZ, he explained that in the beginning, Mr D’s questions seemed rather casual. But, eventually, he began to realise that his intentions were not pure.
He would frequently become curious about the other male friends that Jay befriends and would try to get Jay to pass their phone numbers. At times he would claim that he knows some of Jay’s friends and would like to touch base with them.
Asked inappropriate questions and made sexual remarks
Mr D would also ask inappropriate questions and make sexual remarks before requesting Jay to delete their messages.
Asked for pictures of his friends
He even asked Jay if he had hung out with any other male friends and asked for pictures of them.
Once, Mr D asked Jay if he had sex with any of his female or male friends. Feeling tired of tolerating his remarks for almost 3 months, Jay sent a voice note to the lecturer saying “No, I did not. Why are you behaving this way?”
The lecturer ignored his question and just told him to delete their conversation. But, a few minutes later, he resumed asking inappropriate questions.
Made sexual remarks about Jay’s family members
It even got to the point where Mr D would make sexual remarks about Jay’s family members.
Reached out to another lecturer for help
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Jay explained that he did reach out to another fellow lecturer in the same college, hoping that she would help him.
However, the lecturer instead allegedly advised him to not take action against Mr D as the perpetrator is the only male lecturer in the college and making a report would only tarnish the college’s reputation.
Hence, Jay decided to take things publicly in hopes he would seek the justice he deserves.
“To be honest I’m feeling so scared and insecure. I feel uncomfortable studying at that college and annoyed by the lecturer’s action towards me. From my story, many students out there will be aware and speak out for justice against this kind of inappropriate behavior from the lecturers.”
More needs to be done to protect students
“I personally feel that every college management should be interviewed properly and check their records before recruiting lecturers and staff. Not only that, the management needs to take initiative to follow up their employee’s behaviour and attitude so that students will feel more secure and the lecturers and staff would be aware,” Jay said.
It is never too late to speak up. Remember, you are not alone and there are people and organizations out there who can help you.
