4 years ago, it was reported that British rock band, Coldplay (who has always advocated for the environment), had partnered with Dutch non-profit organisation; The Ocean Cleanup (founded by Dutch inventor Boyan Slat), to sponsor a river Interceptor called Neon Moon 1 (Interceptor 005) to help clean up our rivers!
Since then, the Interceptor has been collecting rubbish from the Klang River.
Now, it has been revealed that Coldplay will be using the plastic waste collected by the Interceptors in Malaysia and Indonesia to make the vinyl records for their upcoming 10th studio album, Moon Music! The Coldplay Malaysia Instagram page showcased a video of the band sharing this information during a TV interview.
Coldplay Malaysia wrote, “Made from plastic collected in rivers from Malaysia and Indonesia. 9 plastic bottles are recycled to produce each vinyl, Chris Martin said. Thank you Coldplay and The Ocean Cleanup.”
During the interview, the vinyl records were displayed as Chris explained its composition.
“These vinyls are made from plastic collected from rivers in Malaysia and Indonesia, by a thing called the river cleanup boat that we co-invested in. So all of these are made from 9 plastic bottles,” he told the interviewer.
While others praised the band for their efforts in recycling materials, one person pointed out that we shouldn’t be proud as it means that we produce and litter an insane amount of plastic waste.
Well, he’s not wrong.
