In an incident that occurred in May, a Malaysian e-hailing driver with a disability was reportedly punched by an escort linked to the Johor royal family while in Kuala Lumpur.
Even though the escort faced internal disciplinary action, the public has expressed outrage, with many feeling that the punishment isn’t enough for the violent behaviour.
The victim was coerced into dropping the case
Berita Harian reported earlier today that the suspect is facing charges under Section 323 of the Penal Code at the Kuala Lumpur Court at 8:30 AM today.
Earlier reports indicated that the e-hailing driver initially filed a police report but later decided to withdraw it.
The Malaysian Deaf Advocacy and Well-being Organisation (DAWN) subsequently issued a statement revealing that he was coerced into dropping the case.
The incident also caught the attention of Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, the Regent of Johor, who urged authorities to investigate and take action regarding the case.
12 individuals were questioned in connection with the case
According to Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa, the driver filed a second police report on May 28 to retract his initial claim made that same day, as reported by Berita Harian.
In the investigation that followed, the police took statements from 12 individuals connected to the case involving a disabled driver who alleged he was assaulted by a VIP’s escort at the hotel.
Those interviewed included the escort, hotel staff present during the incident, members of the Special Action Unit (UTK) from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), other escorts in the VIP’s entourage, the complainant’s friend, a doctor, and the operations director from the e-hailing company.
