Yoga is an ancient form of art that not every Tom, Dick and Harry can teach. This is because, if it is not learnt from the right person, it could go seriously wrong, just like this four-year-old girl from Zhengzhou, China who now faces being paralysed for life after performing a risky yoga pose at an unlicensed dance studio, reported Daily Mail.

The incident was captured by the CCTV in the studio when the young girl, Xiao Bao, attempted the ‘back bridge’ pose as part of their warm-up session, only to stumble and collapse under her own weight. Ouch!

However, she wasn’t the only child who was trying to do the pose, as a dozen other children also attempted it, but Xiao Bao happened to be the unlucky one to have hurt herself in the process.

She was later rushed to the hospital after the unfortunate fall because she wasn’t feeling her legs and had a loss of continence.

After the diagnosis, the head of neurosurgery in Zhengzhou Children’s Hospital, Dr Qi Lin, said that Xiao Bao hadn’t broken her spine but had possibly damaged it due to performing difficult moves taught by her dance instructors. According to the doctor, the little girl was likely to be suffering from a spinal contusion – aka bruising of the spinal cord.

“It’s not looking optimistic. There’s a very big chance that this child could be paralysed for life in her lower body,” said the doctor.

Poor girl.

On top of that, it was also reported that Xiao Bao’s parents had found out that the private dance instructors don’t have official certificates to operate a dance studio. Thus, this indicates that they aren’t professionals and should not be teaching these dangerous moves to mere four-year-olds. Nevertheless, the parents did not disclose if they had reported the class owners to the police. Well, IMO, they should have!

Meanwhile, the girl’s father claimed that the dance instructors had offered them a sum of 1,131 pounds (approx. RM6,166) to settle the matter but it is understood that the sum offered will be increased.

So, remember guys, the next time you attempt a risky yoga pose or physical activity, be sure you’re under the supervision of a certified expert!
