Come 2018, Ampang Park shopping centre, which is Malaysia’s first ever shopping mall, will be closed down for good and many locals are still having a tough time accepting this news.

All resident business owners will have to move out by 31 December as it will be demolished in the near future to make way for the Ampang MRT station, according to NST.

Located on Jalan Ampang, this iconic shopping mall first opened its doors in 1973 and it used to be the lepak spot for all the orang atas and foreignersIt was such a huge success that it paved way for other malls such as Sungei Wang Plaza and Pertama Complex, both of which were opened in the late ’70s.

The tenants in Ampang Park did take legal action and challenged the demolition in court, but to no avail. As the closing date draws nearer, more and more tenants have been moving out and are in search for a new place to make a living. In fact, some floors are now completely vacant.

For the past 44 years, countless memories were made in this place, which is why locals have been flocking here recently to lepak one last time before it closes down forever. Some even took pictures of the place as memento.

Netizens online too, were mourning for this nostalgic place.

“When I was a kid, my father would bring my sister and I to this mall every weekend,” a netizen said.

“The building will be gone soon but it will always have a special place in our hearts,” another Facebook user commented.
