We’re all definitely aware that Johoreans are super proud of their state, which is why this recent poll might not be so shocking for some of us!

According to a recent survey, it was found that a significant amount of people from the state identified strongly as “Bangsa Johor”, regardless of their race, with about nine out of ten Johoreans identifying with the label. The study surveyed a total of 2,011 Malaysians from Johor between May and June 2017.

What’s even more interesting is that over one in ten people from this state said that they are “Bangsa Johor” first and Malaysians second.

The study, which was done by the ISEAS-Yusof Shaf Institute, investigated Johoreans’ views on identity, education, and their royal family.

According to this study, 88 per cent of people from this state identify as “Bangsa Johor”. The highest percentage of people from this state who identify with this label the most is the Chinese community (90.5 per cent). Malay people came in second at 88.2 per cent, while 81.7 of Indians identified as “Bangsa Johor”. Across all ethnic groups, their Malaysian nationality came second to their state identity.

Apart from that, the study also found that most Johoreans support bringing back public English-medium schools, and a large percentage of all ethnic groups also agree with the “One School for All” concept.

As for their opinions about the Johor Royal Family, a large majority of them hold them in high regard, believing that their Sultan looks after the personal interests of citizens and is a good guardian of Islam.
