The relationship between a couple before and after marriage often changes drastically as the weight of responsibilities land on their shoulders. This load increases even more after couples start having children and more commitments.

Some couples start taking time off for themselves away from the family, but this seems to be terribly frowned upon by society.

Well, one local celebrity doesn’t see a problem with this and often lets her husband to go off for his fishing trips, which often last a few days – and people just cannot fathom how she does it.

So, since she has had many people asking her about this, Hanis Zalikha wrote a status on her official Facebook page, which reads,

“I get this question a lot – husband and hobby.”

“This isn’t advice, but merely me sharing my experience. Even when my husband and I were friends, I’ve always supported and even joined in on his hobbies and interests.”

“I played paintball with his friends, badminton, went scuba diving and fishing at Muara (Brunei). So, I don’t think that should change just because we got married.”

Preach, sista!

“When men are interested in something, they will definitely be focused and excited about it. Just like how when they are when chasing after us women – no one can stop them.”

“Which is why men with hobbies are good because they can spend their energy on different aspects of their lives too.”

As great as a passionate man is in Hanis’s point of view, she also stresses the importance of being logical and practical.

“Of course, he can’t just go off enjoying his hobby every week after he’s married. Since he has a hobby, his wife should also have a hobby, or at least spend time doing something she personally likes.”

“He can go on his fishing trips, I can go on my girls’ trips.”

“However, the number one rule is: after marriage, we can continue with our hobbies but we must first take care of our children.”

Ultimately, Hanis highly encourages women to let their husbands keep their hobbies.

“You really do not want to take that away from him. The passion, the drive and the happiness from doing the things he loves is what makes him the person you admire in the first place.”

“So, appreciate your man and his passion. A man full of life can love you better.”

Indeed, there have been too many cases of unfair treatment between couples due to hobbies and interests. However, both husband and wife should allow each other to enjoy their own hobbies and have their personal time.

After all, everyone needs space of their own every now and then!
