We have always heard about Grab and Uber passengers being the victims of shady drivers but this time around, a devious passenger allegedly robbed this Grab driver of more than S$500 (RM1,574) in just a few short minutes in an incident that happened on July 23.

In a viral video that was uploaded on social media, the thief was caught red-handed on camera stealthily helping himself to some things at the armrest area on the pretense of leaning forward to give directions to the driver.

In fact, the crooked passenger who was sitting in the backseat does this a few times and after that, you can spot that he is holding something in his hands, behind the driver’s back. Then, he quickly rifles through the things in his hands, which appears to be a wad of cash, and stuffs them in his pocket.

He seems to be satisfied with his loot and takes out his wallet to pay the driver as he approaches his destination. In the video, after he pays for the ride, he even says, “It’s okay. Just keep the change!” Of course he can be generous, he just stole a pile of money!

It was only after the passenger got down from the car that the driver realised he had lost his hard-earned money. A screenshot of a WhatsApp message sent from the hapless Grab driver to his friend was also circulated in the post.

According to the messages, the driver said, “I’m afraid the thief would do the same to other drivers. Luckily I installed a camera in the car otherwise I wouldn’t even know who had stolen my money.” His friend commiserated with his loss while asking him for more information about the thief.

It appears that the thief boarded the car at Ang Mo Kio and alighted at Jalan Kayu, Woodlands but the driver did not have his details anymore as the information was gone after the ride was completed. He also said that the S$500 (RM1,574) that was stolen is equivalent to about three days’ worth of hard work.

Poor guy! Hopefully he managed to lodge a report with the relevant authorities and stop that thief from doing his criminal activities.
