It’s always a joy to see Malaysians making names abroad, and this time, a local athlete is making us proud by becoming the 1st Malaysian medal winner at the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia.

The female athlete, Wan Athirah Hidayah Ahmad Fuzli was left puzzled to be declared as Malaysia’s 1st medal winner because another athlete, William Yoong was thought to have won the medal. He clocked 28.234s to beat Cambodia’s Ol Saoheng for third place.

Wan Athira had clocked 41.724s in the women’s 100m individual obstacle race, with Indonesia’s Anggun Yolanda finishing third with 39.598s, as reported by New Straits Times. Despite Wan Athirah’s result, the organisers decided to award Wan Athira a bronze medal, which is shared with Anggun Yolanda.

It’s a strange move by the organisers, however, Wan Athirah said she has no comments on the decision but couldn’t deny her mixed feelings.

“They decided on a shared bronze medal for me. I was surprised because I lost the bronze medal round,” Wan told the media.

She also admitted that she could not believe the last-minute decision made by the organisers, however, she said that she is grateful for the medal. You can watch the clip below which was shared by Hot FM’s Facebook page.
