Chinese New Year is just around the corner, and a lot places in Malaysia have also started to hang up red lanterns to celebrate the festival.

According to the Penang State Legislative Assembly for Air Putih Lim Guan Eng, Penang Butterworth’s Jalan Raja Uda is believed to be the street with the most lit red lanterns in the country.

Since 2009, Jalan Raja Uda has hung up thousands of lanterns every Chinese New Year, making it one of the characteristics of Penang and Butterworth. “However, due to the pandemic, the project was suspended for 2 years (2021 and 2022), and now it is back again, which also fulfils our promise to resume this plan during the general election,” he said in his Facebook post.

The red lanterns have no end in sight, adding a vibrant and lively CNY vibe to the ordinary town.

According to Lim Guan Eng, the project costed a total of RM350,000. “The lanterns were provided by Tah Wah Group. The Penang State Government allocated RM50,000 ringgits, I myself allocated RM100,000, and Sungai Puyu state assemblyman Phee Boon Poh and Bagan Jama state assemblyman Soon Lip Chee each allocated RM30,000 ringgits,” he stated.

He added that RM20,000 was allocated by Satees Muniandy, the state assemblyman of Bagan Dalam, and the remaining RM120,000 was contributed by Dato Sri Hong Yeam Wah, the President of Tah Wah Group, and his friends.

What a beautiful sight! Should more places in Malaysia emulate the same thing? Let us know in the comments.
