The Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) is likely to become part of the government as it is also part of Perikatan Nasional. Just last night (November 21), the Secretary-General of PAS assured Malaysians, especially the non-Muslims and said that they will not be forcing their ways onto the rakyat.

In a statement, Takiyuddin Hassan said that PAS will not use its added advantage to implement policies that will suppress people of various races, and they will continue to make collective decisions with other parties.

“We also hold to the Islamic principle of ‘no compulsion in religion’, where no one can force non-Muslims to convert to Islam against their will”, Takiyuddin assured.

Takiyuddin also strongly denied that the party will oppress others, especially those in Sabah and Sarawak where its people coexist peacefully in accordance with their respective cultures and religions. He assured that PAS has always respected the diversity and plurality of Malaysia.

“PAS always respects that and recognises their rights and freedoms to practice their own way of life.”

To prove his point, Takiyuddin said that PAS has been showing openness and guaranteeing the rights of people of various races and religions in the government led by Pas in Kelantan for over 30 years. When it comes to diversity, he also highlighted that people from different educational backgrounds and professional backgrounds, including a number of professionals in numerous sectors, make up the members of PAS.
