As the 15th General Election (GE15) is coming up every quickly, there are many factors for voters to consider before casting their ballot on that decisive day.

Some of the factors include whether or not they listen to the woes of those in their represented constituencies and their overall reputation as the ‘people’s representative’.

However, one major factor we should not overlook is an incumbent member of parliament’s (MP) attendance rate in previous Dewan Rakyat sittings as only when they appear in parliament would they be able to voice out our concerns properly.

Parliament

According to Parlimen Malaysia, there has been a total of 89 Dewan Rakyat sittings between 26 July 2021 and 7 October this year.

The best of the best

However, only about 6% of our MPs have actually attended all the sessions which is a very tiny proportion of the total 222 elected representatives in parliament.

Based on data collected by MP watchdog MYMP, only 14 MPs have a 100% attendance rates and this includes:

Government:

  • Sik MP Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman (PAS),
  • Jempol MP Datuk Seri Mohd Salim Mohd Shariff (UMNO),
  • Libaran MP Datuk Zakaria Mohd Edris (Bersatu).

Opposition:

  • Merbok MP Nor Azrina Surip (PKR),
  • Subang MP Wong Chen (PKR),
  • Bukit Bendera MP Wong Hon Wai (DAP),
  • Kampar MP Thomas Su Keong Siong (DAP),
  • Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh Tseow Suan (DAP),
  • Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lin (DAP),
  • Seremban MP Anthony Loke Siew Fook (DAP),

  • Temerloh MP Datuk Mohd Anuar Mohd Tahir (Amanah),
  • Tampin MP Datuk Dr Hasan Bahrom (Amanah),
  • Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau (UPKO).

Prior to the parliamentary sessions in October, Shah Alam MP Khalid Abdul Samad (Amanah) also had a 100% attendance record, however, this has since changed as he missed out on 3 parliamentary sessions which takes his attendance rate to 96.63%.

Based on the 14 MPs with stellar attendance rates, 6 were from DAP, PKR (2), Amanah (2), UPKO (1), PAS (1), UMNO (1) and BERSATU (1).

The always ponteng gang

On the other hand, the 11 MPs with the lowest attendance rates all recorded an attendance rate of less than 40% out of the total 89 parliamentary sessions.

In descending order:

  • Padang Temu MP Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid (UMNO): 34 days or 38.20%
  • Tenggara MP Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba (UMNO): 33 days or 37.07%
  • Bera MP Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (UMNO): 32 days or 35.95%
