Our authorities and government need to do better, for they have severely neglected the well beings of the students in Sabah and Sarawak.

Children in the two states have had to take risky measures to get to their schools and are endangering themselves to get an education. But, should they have to?

@Asmirsaharuddin took to his Twitter account to showcase how a little girl in Sabah had fallen after the rotting bridge she takes to and from school had collapsed under her.

Bridge 1

He wrote, “At a time when the government is busy with things that they are not supposed to (be busy with), my neighbour’s daughter wants to go to school, and the bridge collapses. Endangering the lives of the children, there are other alternatives routes, but they’re a little far.”

This incident took place at Kampung Maidan Beluran, Sabah.

“Her mother said it was pure luck that her daughter didn’t fall onto a nail when she fell. Pity her daughter.”

“Some people asked why she didn’t take the long way. Like this, her father always goes to sea early in the morning to work as a fisherman, so her mother sends the children to school. Her mother is not good at riding a motorcycle, so the bridge is closer,” he explained.

Either way, students shouldn’t have to endure such situations to get to school.

Bridge 2

“Her mother said her thank yous for having care for her daughter and hopes that the bridge will be repaired immediately. She said that this issue, since last year, there is a provision for repairs but to this day, until the little girl fell, there is still nothing (that has been done),” he added.

More care and attention are required from the authorities to fix problems that actually affect the people and to improve their daily routines and livelihoods.
