We have all heard the PSAs that tell us the dangers of getting out from your car for strangers, especially in the middle of the night. Heeding this advice, 47-year-old Ooi Geok Swan experienced a nerve-racking night after she was chased by four unknown men driving motorcycles in the wee hours of the morning.

Apparently she was driving home alone when several men knocked on her window near Sungai Bakap Chinese cemetery.

“I panicked and sped off as it was 3am and there was no one else in the area. While driving, I noticed them following me on their motorcycles and I decided to go to the Jawi police station for safety,” she said.

In her haste to reach the Jawi police station located more than 1km away, she beat two red traffic lights. As she pulled into the compound, two of the motorcyclists followed her inside. The men then informed her they were plainclothes policemen and question the reason she ran away from them.

“I told them that I did not know that they were policemen as they had not identified themselves or shown their authority cards,” she explained.

A female police constable proceeded to issue two traffic summonses as she ran two red lights on the way to the police station.

Feeling dissatisfied, Ooi decided to lodge a report about the incident but allegedly, the police refused to accept her report and instead told her to settle the summonses.

Ooi approached Jawi assemblyman Soon Lip Chee for assistance and he said that he would contact police chief Datuk Wira Chuah Ghee Lye to investigate the matter and cancel the summonses, as Ooi did not mean to beat the red lights and was acting out of fear.
